What minerals and supplements do I take for Bone health, Osteopenia or Osteoporosis?

Nearly all of my gut health clients have osteopenia or oestroporosis. Why is this? Because years of undigested food and poor absorption of nutrients means bones arent getting the raw materials and minerals they need from food, to be strong and flexible in midlife.
I worked in the field of selling drugs for osteoporosis for 5 years. Medication is NOT the way to go for most. Weight bearing exercise like walking, skipping, jumping on trampoline and Hormone replacement therapy and Dietary supports are. The average Irish and UK diet has sufficient calcium. We do NOT need to supplement this as too much calcium causes dysregulation of other minerals. The latest evidence is now showing calcium supplements are causing calcification of the arteries, which no one needs for heart health!
Vitamin D, yes we all need but ideally not by supplements as its in the least optimal form for the bones to use. Eat oily fish, mushrooms and avonmore milk weekly. Getting regular Sun on your skin is the best way. Ideally 2 sun holidays a year. To read about why this is so important see link in bio for my blog.

Optimising Vitamin K2 & Minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium is KEY for bone health.MK-7 (Menaquinone-7) and MK-4 (Menatetrenone-4) are both forms of vitamin K2:

  • MK-7 is commonly found in fermented foods and supplements. It has a longer side chain, stays in the body longer, and is better absorbed.
  • MK-4 is found in animal products and supplements. It has a shorter half-life but is thought to be more effective at activating certain proteins related to bone health. MK4 from AOR health is one of my favourites
We can test your minerals & see whether you are excreting or retaining calcium and other minerals by doing HTMA hair test. This maybe the best thing youve ever done for your bone health! It shows the actual cellular level of every mineral. Do not take random supplements, without the support of a practitioner to do above testing, as its the ratio of minerals to each other that is vital, not the individual mineral deficiency or excess. Too much of one supplement like calcium can cause havoc for your magnesium level as those two minerals work antagonistically together. Please share and tag anyone who needs to hear this info.
