Is your child unable to sit for homework too?For the past 3 years he majorly struggled with homework. I had to sit with him for an hour a day to get basic homework done EVERYDAY. Its was torture for all of us and it caused lots of rows and stress. Age 9 we approached school for dyslexia assessment and reduced homework as it was effecting our family life so much. He was diagnosed with it, he could never remember more than 6 spellings per test despite him trying so hard.
If your child cant sit down and do his homework independantly he may need to be seen by CAMHs refered in by your GP. I never once thought my child could have ADHD as he is the quiestest, kindest, most mannerly child, the teachers gem, and never causes trouble at school. BUT You dont have to be throwing chairs around classroom to have ADHD as there are many different “milder less obvious” symptoms.
For everyones sake investigate if you think your child is different to peers. The only other symptoms we notice are extreme sensitivity to pain, like a kick at football, and immaturity he acts and feels like a 9 yr old. Had some worries about peer relationship in 3rd class
But now medicated socially hes really found his tribe and his voice thanks to our fabulous child psychiatrist Dr Neka Kalu in Sligo an amazing mum of 5 children she knows how hard we all have it!
Underneath he has chronic fatigue methylation, gut, thyroid, liver, adrenal issues none of which are seen medically that i see that i am working on behind scenes with supplements..but the ritalin gets him out of bed easy, he has energy to do full days activities and homework unassisted. For that alone we are grateful.
I would love to see him on an antidepressant to boost his serotonin and norephinepherine to help his mood for better cognitive functining but as theres currently no clinical indicaton for major depression anxiety they wont prescribe it. With the MTHFR genetic snips im sure its going to hit us once puberty lands..il keep you updated as we move through the system and my research and whar we are trying. But im soo glad i got him checked for ADHD. Your gut feeling is never wrong
