Overweight, Stressed or Spotty? Why Your Gut Might Be Causing your Anxiety

Do you suffer from significant stress, anxiety or depression? Do you think it is related to your monthly cycles? Is it having a significant effect on your monthly functioning?

It might be time to start looking inwards. At your gut. 🧠

You may think your digestion issues are as a result of your stress, but in fact, it is your gut that is most likely causing the bulk of the stress anxiety in the first place.

gut health

When we consider the connection between the brain and the gut, it’s important to know that 90% of serotonin receptors are located in the gut. Yes, a diet rich in prebiotic food can help (See lots of tips in my gut health highlights on Instagram), but it is only one part of treatment.

It’s important to note that just like you cannot exercise out of a bad diet, you also cannot eat your way out of feeling depressed or stressed or anxious.

Did you know that if you have SIBO (small intestinal bacterial) or SIFO (small intestinal fungal overload) or a fungal mycotoxin, that your liver will be working to the point of exhaustion trying to excrete these so it hasn’t got the energy left to work on the important job of processing your feel-good womanly hormones? SIBO is also the root cause in most cases of acne, acne rosacea, psoriasis, eczema.

SIBO Test

Getting a SIBO test done can help address these skin conditions. Your cortisol another important hormone might be out of sync because of microbial overgrowth, so your sleep will be terrible. You may feel varying degrees of horridness-fatigue, apathy, hopelessness, anxiety throughout the month.

This is an area our medical GPs in Ireland know very little about but in the USA and Australia, there is much more widespread testing and much more known about the effect of gut microbial overgrowth on our mental health.
